Description
These French Onion Soup Burgers are a bold and cozy twist on a classic. Juicy beef patties are seasoned with onion soup mix, topped with caramelized onions, melted Gruyère, and served on toasted onion buns. It’s French onion soup reimagined as a burger.
Ingredients
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 packet or about 4 to 6 tablespoons homemade French onion soup mix
2 1/2 tablespoons butter
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
A pinch of dried thyme
3/4 cup water, as needed
1 tablespoon brandy or sherry (optional)
4 to 8 ounces Gruyère or Provolone cheese
4 onion buns
Butter or oil for toasting buns
Instructions
1. Mix ground beef with onion soup mix and let it rest.
2. Heat butter in a skillet, add onions, thyme, and 1/4 cup water. Cover and simmer for 3–4 minutes until tender.
3. Uncover, cook onions until deeply golden, adding water as needed. Stir in brandy or sherry at the end.
4. Form four 6-ounce patties, pressing a small dent in each.
5. Sear patties in a hot pan or grill for 3 minutes.
6. Flip, top with onions and cheese, lower heat, cook 2–4 minutes until desired doneness.
7. Toast buns with butter or oil in a hot pan or grill.
8. Assemble burgers and serve immediately.
Notes
You can prepare the onions ahead and store them in the fridge.
Brandy or sherry adds depth but can be skipped.
Try a side of warm broth for dipping for a full French onion soup experience.
